CIMB Foundation Launches MYCAUSE Photography Contest

25 May 09

Kuala Lumpur: CIMB Foundation today launched the ‘MYCAUSE: Photos That Make a Difference’ contest that empowers people to help the community by highlighting causes that require funding.

Participants are required to take a creative photo of a cause on community development, sports or education and write a short essay of about 100 words explaining why the cause deserves funding from CIMB Foundation. The contest will run for 2 months beginning today - 25 May 2009 and ends on - 31 July 2009. Winners of the photography contest will walk away with cash prizes, but more importantly, CIMB Foundation has set aside over RM400,000 to fund winning and selected causes.

The contest was launched by Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof, Chairman of CIMB Group and Trustee of CIMB Foundation and Dato’ Shukri Hussin, CEO of CIMB Foundation and a member of the Foundation's Board of Trustees. Dato’ Sri Nazir Razak, Group Chief Executive of CIMB Group was also present at the event.

In his speech, CEO of CIMB Foundation Dato’ Shukri Hussin said that ‘MYCAUSE: Photos That Make a Difference’ is a first of its kind photography contest that enables CIMB Foundation to empower the public to identify causes which the Foundation should fund during these difficult times.

“We believe that this photography contest will enable us to engage as many people as possible in raising awareness and at the same time provide a platform for anyone, of any age, to present to CIMB Foundation a cause which they feel strongly about. It gives everyone an opportunity to give back,” he said.

Shukri added that even if some of the causes do not receive funding this time round, the Foundation will be able to generate an inventory of deserving causes for funding in the future. “The public should use this opportunity to bring to the forefront initiatives, individuals or projects that have not had the opportunity to receive financial assistance due to lack of publicity. To create further awareness on these causes, CIMB Foundation will display the top 100 photographs in a public exhibition at the end of the contest,” he explained.

‘MYCAUSE: Photos That Make a Difference’ contest is divided into 2 categories; Open and Student. The Winner in the Open category receives a cash prize of RM30,000 while the cause highlighted in the winning photo will receive funding of up to RM100,000. 2nd and 3rd prize winners will walk away with RM20,000 and RM10,000 respectively. Meanwhile, a total of 10 consolation prize winners will receive RM2,000 each.

The 1st prize winner in the Student category receives RM10,000 while the cause highlighted in the winning photo will also receive a funding of up to RM100,000. 2nd and 3rd prize winners will get RM5,000 and RM3,000 respectively. The 10 consolation prize winners will receive RM500 each. An additional prize is included in the Student category where the school with the highest number of submissions, as a percentage of the total number of students in the school, will be rewarded with RM10,000 cash.

As was mentioned earlier, CIMB Foundation has provisionally set aside RM400,000 to fund the winning and other causes highlighted by the competition.

To participate, the public must register and submit their applications online at http://mycause.cimbfoundation.com where they can also obtain further information and the rules and regulations of the contest. The contest will run until 31 July 2009.
